How to make Breadcrumbs at home – Homemade Bread Crumbs

Homemade Bread Crumbs

Breadcrumbs are quite easy to make. All you need is BREAD.

As a bakers’ child, breadcrumb was always present in our home.
After each day’s production at the bakery, some of the bread might come out shapeless due to handling and can’t be sold out, so it is usually shared among the bakery staff or reserved for making bread crumbs.

Well, you don’t have to own a bakery to make bread crumbs, simply gather up all the left over bread you can find at home, and let’s get started.

But before we go on, here are some yummy recipes that require breadcrumbs ; Scotch eggs, Stuffed yam/potato balls, Battered plantains,  breaded shrimps and battered fish.

For the bread crumbs you’ll need:

* Bread
* A Blender (this comes very handy, if you are making a lot)

1. Cut or tear the bread into very tiny and thin pieces and spread out on a tray.
This could be a baking tray of a normal kitchen tray, but let it be wide enough to give each piece of bread enough room to dry.

2. Place the tray out in the sun or if you have an oven let it dry in the oven at temperature, but watch it closely , so that it does not get burnt.
Tip: if you’re doing this on a rainy day, you can leave it out on your kitchen table. It will dry completely in 2 days, while the sun-dried method takes a few hours and oven drying only takes a few minutes.

3. Now that the bread is all dried up, you can easily crumble it with your hands.
But please go the easy way, and grind it in a blender, until you get a fine powder.
If it doesn’t come out too fine, pass it through a sieve and you have a fine homemade Breadcrumbs.. see, it’s easy !

Now that you have some bread crumbs, it’s time to try out these yummy recipes:
– Scotch eggs
– Stuffed yam/potato balls

How long does homemade breadcrumbs keep.If I dried them properly will they stay good for a long time?

If you dry them very well, they will keep for up to 6months depending on how well you store them. But it's best to pour into a freezer bag and store in the freezer.

Thanks a lot for this! I need to make it right away! Can I dry over stove rather than in an oven?
