Bitter leaf plant

Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) is a vegetable used for preparing the popular Bitter leaf soup. It is also known as Onugbu, Shiwaka & Ewuro by the Igbos, Hausas&Yorubas in Nigeria.

Although this plant has been around for hundreds of years, only a few people know of its medicinal and healing properties.

Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) as the name implies, is actually a bitter plant whose leaves, extracts, stems and barks are used for culinary, medicinal and curative purposes.
  Vitamins in Bitter leaf includes;Vitamin A, Vitamin C ,Vitamin E, Vit.B1 and Vit.B2.

My grandma was a big fan of the bitter leaf juice, and on one of my visits she made me drink the juice to cure a fever. I hated the bitter taste, at that time, but when I realized the fever was gone, I humbly joined the Bitter leaf fan club … …. those grey hair on her head ain’t there for nothing, Right?.

Bitter leaf and Spinach Juice

Well, to get the best results from the bitter leaf plant, it’s best taken freshly squeezed from the leaves.

How to extract the Bitter leaf Juice
This can be done, the old school way of rubbing the clean leaves in between your palms with the help of a little water and squeezing out the juice from the leaves.

You can also use a juicer or blend the leaves with a little water, in a blender and strain out the extract with a cheese cloth, coffee strainer or a sieve with a tight mesh.

Bitter leaf juice on its own, is quite bitter and this taste might be a turn off for a lot of people.
So to reduce the bitterness of the  bitter leaf juice, simply blend it with spinach or Ugwu (fluted pumpkin). If you still find it extremely bitter, then add some sweet fruit juices to it, such as pineapple , apples or oranges.

Dry bitter leaf is also potent, but has to be properly cleaned before use.

thanks for sharing such an incredible knowledge. For this is an amazing opportunity and an eye ? opener for me. As a matter of fact, bitter leaves as soup ? isn’t common in my country, Liberia ??. But the lesson learned here today is going to have a lasting effect on me and my family, and subsequently my country and the world at large.

One truly can’t get a huge benefit that way because a lot of the juice is washed off
before the leaves are used for cooking, but you can get some benefits like it
helps to fight cold and stomach aches

Hello please we asked questions that can ulcer patients eat bitter leaf soups or the fresh bitter leaf juice and still no response, let the people suffering from stomach ulcer know so they can be sure if to use it it or not. Thanks for your assistance

    • June 21, 2019 / 7:21 pm

Mr .Monnet, Ulcer patients can eat bitter leaf soup because the bitter leaf used to prepare the soup isn’t as potent as the fresh leaves.
This is because it has gone through a lot of process, whereby the bitterness of the leaf has been reduced, thereby reducing the potency of the bitterleaf.
But they should make sure that the soup isn’t too spicy.
As for the bitter leaf juice, I have heard that it may cure stomach ulcers, but I cannot recommend it as I am not a medical professional or a therapist.
Please check with a professional or herbal expert before using it to treat any ailment.

I have a big package from a friend of mine from Nigeria. It dries. I make tea with it every day. Do you think that can help me with my high blood pressure?

    • January 24, 2019 / 1:18 pm

Yes it can, but if you are on blood pressure medication , ask your doctor first before use, because herbal teas might interact negatively with some drugs.

I forgot to inform one important thing, make sure you are not emotionally stressed. Stress will cancel out therapeutic effects of bitter leaf. So after consuming bitter leaf and you don't feel any improvement, it could be your dosage is wrong or any of the things I mentioned above.

  18. Daniel Prasetyo
    December 14, 2017 / 2:25 am

Don't forget to minimum drink 2 liters/day of water plus don't consume coffee, tea, carbonated drink and alcoholic drinks. By the way, when you first consume bitter leaf and you feel aches in certain parts of your body, don't worry, bitter leaf is trying to unclogged that area of your body from cholesterol etc. Just move that area (i.e. by swimming or massage) to release this discomfort.

I don't know about miscarriage or induced labour, but, when I was pregnant I craved and ate bitterleaf soup a lot. I carried my pregnancy till 42 weeks I had to let the doctor's medically induce labour. My son is a healthy 3 year old. It worked just fine for me. Might cause miscarriage in others. Bitterleaf is absolutely wonderful, started drinking the juice with my toddler yesterday and we amazingly woke up strong, healthy and happy this morning. No more fever. God is awesome!!!

Hi NKY, am visiting this blog for the first time and am impressed with all the response above. Good job. Wen u take bitter leaf juice for the first time can it bring out malaria and should one continue with the juice and is it appropriate to add milk to the juice if u want to treat Malaria?

    • Nky Lily Lete
      October 23, 2014 / 11:50 am

Thanks dearie. As for the malaria symptoms, if you were bitten by a mosquito like 5 days ago,the Malaria would have come anyway even if you didnt take the juice, because you've already been infected by the bite. Now you have a choice to continue with the juice or just leave it and take a malaria medicine. If you chose to continue with it , don't take it with milk, I can't vouch for the result you'll get if you mix it with milk, but I usually get good results with the juice alone.

Bitter leaf juice is just like any cleansing herb, once you take it, it pushes out harmful toxins from your body. Continue with it , but don't take it with milk, I can't vouch for the result you'll get if you mix it with milk.

A student of mine here in Los Angeles just gave me a branch from a plant of bitter leaf (hence my search for information, concluding at your site!). She told me to stick it in the ground and it will grow. She got it from a Nigerian friend at her church. Now I'd like a little more information – how big does the plant grow? Do I need to find a spot for a two-foot bush, or a tree of ten feet (in a place where the puppy won't dig it up!!). Does it like full sun? (I imagine so, unless it prefers the dense jungle!) How much water? – we are suffering from severe years-long drought here, although we still try to behave as if we live on the East Coast!!

    • Promise Hanson
      May 31, 2015 / 8:27 pm

@ESLmsrene: It grows to about two feet, although I have seen it grow up to 3 feet plus, but mostly 2 feet. And yes it loves the sun. And it needs water, especially at early stage.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      August 21, 2014 / 2:13 pm

Sorry for the late response dear.At 40wks, your baby is fully developed and ready to be delivered, and at the stage, you can't have a miscarriage. I think Your doctor prescribed bitter leaf juice to help your cervix dilate naturally and quickly, since the baby has reached its term.If you are not comfortable with the idea, you can talk to you doctor, he would offer you other alternatives.Wishing you a quick and safe delivery 🙂

If you have heart failure, I wouldn't recommend anything that is not from a doctor. Please ask your doctor to give you a good medicine for your stomach. Bitter leaf juice is a natural drink but also very potent, and it's better taken if you only have mild health issues.

    • Nky Lily Lete

Hi Alero, bitter leaf is a potent plant and has lots of great benefit but due to its bitter taste , most people don't take advantage of this wonderful gift of God. You can't get all the benefits from eating the soup because the one used for preparing the soup has been washed and squeezed thoroughly and has just a little potency.

Is it fine to take bitter leaf water after a miscarriage and is it ok to take it when ttc? Since you said women in guinea bissau use it to contract the uterus after child birth.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      May 7, 2014 / 10:41 am

If you are trying to conceive(ttc) then I'll advice you stay away from bitter leaf juice because it might cause early miscarriage before you even know you are pregnant. If you just had a miscarriage, then bitter leaf juice can help to contract and heal the uterus, but the moment you start trying again(which is usually 2 to 3 months after the miscarriage), you should stop taking it and switch to homemade fruit juices.
