Cake in a Sandwich Maker (Sandwich toaster pillow cake)

Cake in a sandwich toaster / maker? Yes, you read it right!

During my varsity years, the sandwich toaster was every student’s best friend, ‘cos you can easily pop in 2 slices of bread, an egg and some veggies and taddam! you have a yummy ”Naija style toast bread” for breakfast.

I have always wondered what else I could do with my bread toaster; so imagine my excitement yesterday, when I got a message from a subscriber, who wanted to know if she could make a cake without a cake mixer and an oven.

She also stated that, as a campus student she only owned a stove and a sandwich maker, so I thought, why not give it a try?  And now, foodies, I present to you a yummy, soft and spongy cake, made in a Sandwich Toaster …. Enjoy!
**See video recipe below**

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Plain flour (128 grams)
  • 1/2 cup softened Butter /Margarine/ Oil (113 grams)
  • 1 tablespoonful Baking powder
  • 1/2 cup Sugar( 8tbs  or 100 grams )
  • 1-2 Eggs
  • 30 ml milk or water(more or less)
  • 1 tsp.  vanilla /strawberry extract or ground nutmeg(optional)
  • 3 tablespoonful Cocoa Powder/or melted chocolate(optional, but use it if you want a  brown /chocolate cake )
Note that you can make use of any cake recipe, such as the Banana Cake recipe or the Apple Cake Recipe.  So let’s get started.

Preparation:

1. In a large bowl, combine the softened butter and sugar together and beat/mix until creamy.

2. Add the eggs and continue mixing; then add the essence or flavor of choice. Mix thoroughly.

3. Gradually sift in the flour& baking powder, mix and add the milk/water , bit by bit,and continue mixing until you get a light consistency, with no lumps.
If you are making the brown cake, sift in the cocoa powder with the flour.

4. Now, prepare the sandwich toaster by brushing the insides with melted butter or oil. Close it and preheat for 3 minutes.

5. Then scoop in the cake batter into each of the four wells of the sandwich toaster/maker.

Tip: if you want a cake with the shape of toast bread, then fill the sandwich maker to the square mark, but for a smaller triangular cake, fill only the smaller triangular wells.

6. Close the lid and leave for about 3 minutes or until lightly browned on both side.

Tip: To check for doneness, simply dip a toothpick into the cakes;if the toothpick comes out clean and dry, you know the cake is ready, if not, you’ll have to leave it for an extra minute or until well done.

7.  Now, remove the cakes from the sandwich maker , serve and enjoy.

The cake keeps well in the fridge for up to a week, simply pre-heat in the microwave  or leave out in room temperature and it’s fresh again.
Feel free to experiment and be creative with the recipe, you’ll be glad you did ☺.

Thanks for the recipe, please I would like to ask the cause for part of the cake coming off with the cover of the toaster when it is opened.

    • November 7, 2018 / 12:30 pm

Hi Milikay, it’s probably because you didn’t do step 4(grease the toaster ) or you didn’t let it cook completely.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      November 13, 2014 / 2:35 pm

Yes you can bake a cake in the microwave, but I just don't like the texture of microwave cake, but you can give it a try.First, pour the cake batter into a grease microwave safe pan and then place in the microwave (700w or 900w depending on your microwave settings) for 5-8 minutes, then put off,and leave to rest for 5 minutes. Check the cake for doneness, and leave to cool completely.

Whole milk is pasteurized cow milk .That is , cow milk that has gone through some processes to kill any harmful bacteria in it. You can use evaporated milk or dissolved powdered milk as a substitute.

      May 6, 2014 / 9:34 am

Hi sweetie, of course you can. Watch my video and you'll see, how I did it. Don't worry you will surprise your husband. First prepare the cake mix, then call your husband to sit by your side. Now grease and heat up the toaster for 3 minutes, pour the batter into the toaster wells, close and leave to cook for 5 minutes, and VIOLA. you'll see the surprise on your husbands face. Pls send me pics as he bites into the cake .lol 🙂

    • Nky Lily Lete
      February 6, 2014 / 11:10 am

It would work in the microwave too, but then it won't be a sandwich toaster cake but a microwave cake :)To use the recipe in a microwave, pour into a lightly buttered microwave save container(a good mug will do), just fill to half of the container, then leave for 3-5 minutes. You will see the cake rise to the top of the container. To check for doneness, dip a fork into it, if it comes out dry, then the cake is ready.

This is awesome, absolutely awesome. Just this evening we were talking of eating cakes and the disadvantage of having a small oven. With this I can make cakes even before going to work. Thank You soooooo much. What an amazing discovery! My toaster would be working full capacity from now!

Thanks Nky,you are a darling..I need to ask though can one actually bake cake in 5 mins as against the type of cake we bake in the oven for 45 mins or thereabout. I want to be able to know what to tell people at home, they can be very picky when it comes to food. Thanks.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      February 3, 2014 / 12:16 pm

Hi dear, of course you can make a cake in 5 minutes depending on the depth and diameter of the cake. The cake made in the sandwich toaster is thinner and flatter than the one in the oven, so it cooks faster. If you pour your cake batter into a flat pan and place in the oven it would also cook at a shorter time. Don't worry dear, give it a try and you'll be glad you did 🙂

    • Nky Lily Lete
      January 27, 2014 / 5:52 am

Thanks dear .It depends on the capacity of your toaster. Check the cake with a toothpick after 3 minutes, if the toothpick comes out dry, it is ready, but if not, let it stay for an extra minute.

Pls how many cups of sugar can I use for 2 cups of flour

        • May 15, 2021 / 11:12 am

          Hi Temmy, you’ll use about
          1 cup Sugar( 16tbs or 200 grams )
but this could also be less if you
do not like a lot of sweetness.
