Easy Multi-Colour Polka Dots Fondant Cake for Beginners

I am not a big fan of Fondant Cake due to its high sugar content, but when you have kids in the house you just can’t help making one of these.
My little girl loves Polka dots, and to celebrate her Kinder-graduation we decided to make this beautiful Multi coloured Polka dot decoration.
You really don’t need any special tool for this decoration, all you need are :

– A Round Cake (I’m using an 8×3 inch cake,get recipe here)
– 600 gram Fondant (see how to make your fondant from scratch)
– Butter icing (see how to make it)
– Corn flour, Icing sugar or Butter (for your hands and working surface)
– 2 Circular cutters ( a bottle cap will do the job too)
– A small knife
–  Food colouring or food dye( yellow, blue and green colour)
– Hand gloves ( to prevent stains)

Steps:
1. Bake your cake and leave to cool completely. If the top of the cake is uneven, you can level it with a sharp knife. Then coat the top and sides of the cake smoothly with butter icing( see recipe here) and place in the fridge for 1 hour to harden a bit.
The butter icing helps to hide crumbs and bumps on the cake.

2.  Dust, your work surface and rolling pin with icing sugar(or corn flour or butter); Place the fondant on the dusted or greased work table, and roll flat with the rolling pin(about 1/4 inch thick) ; make sure that all sides are equal. Tip: another cool method is to cover the work table with non-stick parchment paper(baking sheet), and roll the fondant on the paper.

3. Fold the rolled fondant on the rolling pin and carefully lift it up. Place onto the coated cake. Tip: if you had used a parchment paper(baking sheet), lift up the paper and gently place the rolled fondant on the cake.

4. Smooth the top and side of the cake, gently pressing the fondant onto the cake; smooth out any creases on the cake and cut out the extra edges with a small knife. Set aside to dry.

5. Now pick up the extra fondant (the one you cut out from the cake), divide it into 4 places, and add different coloring to them(yellow, green, blue and red(a little drop of red gives you pink).

Roll each of them flat and cut out small and big circles (my lil’ girl made the bigger circles with a a bottle cap and the smaller ones with a pipe).
Also roll little circles in between your palms , to make the decoration for the edges of the cake.

6. Dab the decorations with a little water and place on the cake .

U'RE ONE OF THE SWEETEST PERSON WHOM I DO NOT KNOW BUT HAS BLESSED MY LIFE.I am a student who loves baking and cooking so much. My parents could not afford to sponsor trainings I would have loved to attend to get better. Then, I stumbled upon your site….. you ma'am is a blessing to this generation.Ever since I came across this site, have been saving to practice some of these.Have tried some of your recipes. They turned out pretty awesome. However, my meat pie filling was not thick enough…..Nevertheless Aunty NKY, I owe you a big hug…….if only I'll see you.Till then, I like to say I love you for working towards bringing my dreams to reality.God bless you.Signed:Success

I want to know if the butter icing wouldn't melt if the cake is out, may be in the sun

    • Nky Lily Lete
      November 26, 2014 / 8:22 am

Of course it will melt because it has butter in it, but a lot of people add cornstarch to their mixture and it helps to hold the icing, although it will change the taste a bit.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      October 7, 2014 / 8:46 am

Ah..now I get what you're saying. For this type , you have to prepare a white fondant, divide it into 3 different colors and cover each cake separately.

I hop u will c dis. Wat if I want to make a 3tier cake hw wil I place the fondant so it wld stay put. Nd how do I color the fondant red green etc. Tnx

    • Nky Lily Lete
      October 3, 2014 / 3:24 pm

For a 3tier cake, you have to place them together and coat them with butter icing. Coat in such a way that it forms ONE cake.Do you mean red and green together?

is it realy necessary dat it must be butter icing in covering the cake? I have seen sombody use ordinary butter to rub on the cake before covering with fondant.

Butter icing holds better than ordinary butter.

I learnt that different colors are used for different genders, like blue for boys and pink for girl. Wat other colors can i combine with blue to make an attractive cake for brother.

    • Nky Lily Lete
      June 9, 2014 / 8:09 am

Yes dear, you heard right. There are also color combinations that are used for both boys and girls. Other colors comination for boys are, *white light green and blue.* white, navy blue, red and yellow.*blue , red, orangeTo make a polka dot cake for your brother,I'll recommend white background, with navy blue, yellow and red dots.
